  • Director: Andrew Marton
  • Release Date: 15 April 1965 (USA)
  • Run Time: 96 min
  • Country: USA
  • Genre: Sci-Fi

Tagline: Thank God it's Only a Motion Picture!

Trivia: Eugène Lourié had two models of the gantry built. The second was made of balsa wood for the explosion scene. This insured complete destruction of the gantry while avoiding the danger of the set being sprayed by shrapnel.

Goofs: Continuity: After the dive in the mini-sub, Dr. Sorenson asks Dr. Rampion for the negatives so he can inspect them more carefully. The negatives are 120 square format negs, but the cameras used onboard the sub were 35mm format.

“Dr. Steven Sorenson plans to tap the geothermal energy of the Earth’s interior by means of a thermonuclear device detonated deep within the Earth. Despite dire warnings by fellow scientist Ted Rampian, Dr Sorenson proceeds with the experiment after secretly learning that he is terminally ill. This experiment causes a crack to form and grow within the earth’s crust, which threatens to split the earth in two if it is not stopped in time. Written by Teresa E. Tutt <tuttt@rpi.edu>”
